Utah Food Safety Lawyer: 11 Utah Residents Sickened in Salmonella Newport Outbreak Linked to Ground Beef
JBS Tolleson, Inc. of Tolleson, Arizona, recalled 6.9 million pounds of beef on October 4, 2018, and another 5.2 million pounds on December 4, 2018. According to the CDC, these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. So far, 333 cases of Salmonella linked to this outbreak have been reported in 28 states, including 11 individuals in Utah. There have been 91 hospitalizations.
Consumers should check their freezers for products recalled by JBS Tolleson, Inc. which were produced and packaged between July 26 and September 7, 2018. Look for beef labeled with the establishment number "EST. 267." This beef should not be eaten and should be returned to the store. In Utah, these products were sold at Sam's Club, Sprouts, and Smiths.
Salmonella Illnesses
People infected with this strain of Salmonella had illnesses start on dates ranging from August 5, 2018 to November 9, 2018. However, it is important to note that the outbreak is still being investigated and additional illnesses and start dates may be discovered.
Signs and symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Children younger than 5 years, adults older than 65 years, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
